[…] ‘phenomenological’ refers to the study of the essential qualities of human experience. To study an experience phenomenologically means to gain an immediate awareness of that experience by stripping away everything that is not essential to it – things like conventional associations, purely contingent circumstances, and so forth (Cook 1987: 67).
