David Hirst's analysis of Smalley's Base Metals

In a recent article for Organised Sound, I compared the analysis of Smalley's Wind Chimes with his more recent composition, Base Metals (Hirst, 2011). In the article I analyse Base Metals according to Smalley's ideas on space elucidated in his article called 'Space-form and the acousmatic image' (Smalley, 2007). Here is a summary of the method I used for Base Metals:

Attached as a PDF file is a summary of an analysis of Denis Smalley’s Wind Chimes (Smalley, 2004), a detailed version of which formed the heart of my PhD thesis (Hirst, 2006). The thesis was re-written and published as a book (Hirst, 2008). Links to these publications can be found in the References section. Where chapters are mentioned, these refer to chapters in the thesis/book.

Ben Ramsay's analysis of ‘Internal Clock’ by Monolake

 

Monolake’s ‘Internal Clock’ was released on the 2009 album ‘Silence’ on the Imbalance Computer Music label from Berlin, Germany. The piece is an outstanding example of where contemporary dance music, which some might call electronica or IDM, crosses over with acousmatic composition traditions.

This analysis aims to explore how we might apply current acousmatic music theory to explain some of the sounds, shapes and arrangements within the field of IDM and less conventional forms of electronic dance music. 

Panos Amelides' Meattrapezoid Analysis

This is an analysis of Merzbow's "Meattrapezoid" I have made in order to contribute to the OREMA community and hopefully to trigger a discussion on the need of analysis nowadays!

Andrew Hugill's 'Papa Sangre' analysis

This is an attempt at a preliminary analysis of an audio-only game for the iPhone and iPad: Papa Sangre. The paper firstly sets out the context for such a novel choice of subject and argues for the experience of audio-only gaming as worthy of analysis alongside electroacoustic music. It proposes that the only completely satisfactory approach to analysing interactive music, especially in games, would be transdisciplinary. It acknowledges that this paper is far from that ideal.

Sebastien Lavoie's Étude aux chemins de fer analysis

This graphic score analysis of Pierre Schaeffer's "Étude aux chemins de fer" was made with the Acousmographe. At the top part, we can see the that every new "shell" is a new whistle played in the composition and every picture of a train indeed represent a new (or different) sound recording of a train. The middle section is colored by the intensity of the sound files in the spectrogram (the frequencies in Hz) . And lower, the wave file, showing the audio content with the separation of the stereo image (left and right).
